Pumpkin is an on-the-platform café at Manchester Oxford Road train station. It sells a variety of snacks and drinks from tea and coffee to sandwiches and cakes.

Basically the only time to use this is if you don't have time to go across the road to Java. Java does a lovely coffee at a good price, and its literally 30 paces from the station entrance. However, for that last minute emergency snack, Pumkin certainly serves its purpose. Its muffins are pretty nice, as are the cakes. These are recommended more so than the sandwiches and coffees, which are average.

It also flogs newspapers and magazines. Good for emergencies, but you can get better nearby with a few spare minutes.

Yes, I know Pumpkin is just a lame railway station food chain. But I feel very affectionate towards this particular branch. Whenever I get the train from here to my Mum's house, I like to buy an overpriced hot chocolate or herbal tea to keep me warm as I wait on the windy platform. Sometimes I even treat myself to a paper, Grazia and a chocolate bar. Yep, I'm pretty rock 'n' roll!

Sadly, this little café lacks all the romance of a retro, Brief Encounter-style railway tearoom. If you want a similar experience, I'd recommend the Stalybridge train station Buffet Bar instead. It's a beautiful old-fashioned place that's got plenty of real ales - and you can get the train there from this very station!
